Workshop Schedule

Whether painted, dyed, woodburned or carved, gourds can be transformed into works of art. In response to the increasing interest in gourds and gourd art, we're excited to offer a creative assortment of gourd crafting workshops to help you discover this wonderful pursuit.

All classes are held on our gourd farm just outside the quaint little town of Cookstown. Surrounded by lush gardens and the beautiful gourd patch, this is the perfect place for a day of learning and creativity.

Our instructors have many years of gourd crafting and teaching experience and represent some of the best gourd artists in Canada. Each is an expert in their field.

All classes, unless otherwise noted, are 6 hours in length with a half hour lunch break. A convenient starting time of 10 a.m. for all our classes makes for a leisurely drive from many parts of Ontario and the United States. All the following classes are rated for beginners.

Customers may cancel up to 10 days before workshop for a full refund. After that, a 25% service charge will be applied and the balanced refunded. Sculpture

This beginners workshop will teach some of the basic techiques in sculpting a face. No molds are used, the face is sculpted free hand. The head will be then attached to a suitable gourd and then painted. Further embellishments will include feathers, fur, beads and suede. The chest shield will be made out of porcupine quills. Better quality paint brushes make a huge difference in finished projects. If you would like me to pick up the following recommended paintbrushes please let me know a week before the workshop. I will not have any available to sell on the day of the workshop. 1/2 angle $3.99 #4 round $3.99 #2 liner $2.99 Beginners will find sculpting easier if they have short nails. Tweezers are recommended for handling the fine quills. Workshop runs from 10 - 4.

Lacing

This lacing technique ia a beautiful rim accent. Students will learn how to measure and prepare the rim for lacing. Feathers will embellish the finished rim. The pointillism technique is not included in this workshop but will be taught on a further date. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Taxes are not included in price.

Celtic Knots

Learn and hone your pyrography skills while creating the beautiful celtic knot. A choice of patters will be provided as well as different colours of memory inks to apply to the design. Transfering patterns to gourds will be taught as well as how to apply inks to small areas. Students are required to bring their own wood burner with knife burning tip. Workshop runs from 10 - 3.

Fall Beauty

Enjoy the rich colours of fall all year after learning the application and blending techniques of memory inks. The use of different finishing sprays will also be explored. Students will design and cut their own leaf patterns using provided templates. In place of using a wood burner to outline the leaves, fine tip Micron pens will be used. Prices do not include tax.

This workshop will teach the student how to clean and prepare their gourd for the final finish of inks. The alcohol inks used in a combination of two and more results in batik and hand dyed looks. hightlights. Students MUST bring a good face mask. Rimming with Suede

Students will learn the basics of cleaning and preparing a gourd for crafting. A variety of colored suede will be available for students to pick for rimming as well as different colors of ink for dying the bowl. Spacing and drilling of holes will also be taught. A N95 disposeable face mask is a must. This can be picked up for a couple of dollars at Canadian Tire. The stippling of the eagle is not included but is available as a separate workshop. Workshop runs from 10 - 3.

Iridescent Texture Vase

Learn how to achieve this lustrous iridescent sheen by combining texture and a myraid of mica colors. Students will learn how to apply and drape texture material to create their own design. Mica powders will then be applied to make a brilliant rainbow like sheen. Workshop runs from 10 - 3.

Stippling ( Pointillism )

Learn how to transfer a design onto a gourd and then by using a pen and dot technique create shade and textures. This is one of my favourite techniques not only because of its meditative effect but also because it is compact enough to take with me on the go. Always somthing to keep my hands busy! One artist pen is included for you to take home. A disposable N95 dust mask is a must. These can be picked up for a couple of dollars at Canadian Tire. Workshop runs from 10 - 2.

Philodendron Couching

Thunder Drum Gourd

Ready to create the beautiful sound of thunder using a thunder drum!! Join us for the day and create one using the combination of a gourd, skin, and spring to give you the realistic sound of thunder. Extra kits will also be available to purchase. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Bring your gourd saws, a few are available to borrow. A N95 face mask is a must. These can be purchased for a few dollars at Home Hardware and Home Depot.

Birdhouse and Feeder

Birds enjoy gourd birdhousesand feeders! From the Purple Martins to your urban wrens and finches you will find that once a bird nests in your birdhouse, they will be back year after year. In this workshop you will learn how to clean & prep the gourd, drill the holes and decorate. Basics of cavity and hole sizes will also be discussed. Dyes and finishes will be available for embellishing . Each student will go home with a finished birdhouse and a finished birdfeeder. Please bring an N95 dust mask that can be picked up at Canadian Tire for a few dollars. Workshop runs from 10 to 3.

Funky Birds!!

This workshop is just plain fun and whimsical! Each student will go home with thier own gourd bird. Students will first choose their metal bird frames. From there it is a trip to the gourd bins to choose that perfect gourd body! Oh so many gourds to choose from!! After washing and prepping the perfect gourd, students will have a rainbow of colours to choose from to paint and finish their birds. Bird frames will all differ as they are hand made. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. N95 dust masks are mandatory and can be picked up at Home Hardware or Home Depot for a few dollars. Your own artist paint brushes are also suggested.

Power Carving Dimensional Ripples

These graceful dimensional ripples will add spectacular depth to your gourd art. The carving and stippling techniques that you practise will give you the knowledge and confidence to progress to more difficult projects. This is a beginner to advance workshops. Students MUST bring own burs and bits. We do have them available for purchase but NOT to loan. Dust mask is a MUST and earplugs recommended. Gourds sizes and shapes will vary. Workshop runs from 10-3.
