Workshop Schedule

Whether painted, dyed, woodburned or carved, gourds can be transformed into works of art. In response to the increasing interest in gourds and gourd art, we're excited to offer a creative assortment of gourd crafting workshops to help you discover this wonderful pursuit.

All classes are held on our gourd farm just outside the quaint little town of Cookstown. Surrounded by lush gardens and the beautiful gourd patch, this is the perfect place for a day of learning and creativity.

Our instructors have many years of gourd crafting and teaching experience and represent some of the best gourd artists in Canada. Each is an expert in their field.

All classes, unless otherwise noted, are 6 hours in length with a half hour lunch break. A convenient starting time of 10 a.m. for all our classes makes for a leisurely drive from many parts of Ontario and the United States. All the following classes are rated for beginners.

Customers may cancel up to 10 days before workshop for a full refund. After that, a 25% service charge will be applied and the balanced refunded. No refund will be given if cancellation is within 3 days of workshop date.

Fall Harvest

Design, cut and colour your own Harvest Bowl and enjoy the rich colours of fall after learning the application and blending techniques of memory inks. Students will design and cut their own leaf patterns using provided templates. In place of using a wood burner to outline the leaves, fine tip Micron pens can be used but a wood burner works best. There are a limited number of saws available to borrow but students will have to supply their own blades which are available for purchase. Borrowing will be on first base request. Workshop runs 10 - 3:30. Prices do not include tax.

Experience level: beginners to advanced
Tools required: Students must provide their own saw and dust mask.

Power Carving Flower

Thank you to Bernadette Fox for allowing me to share this beautiful gourd tutorial with you. This is a great workshop for beginners to learn some of the basic skills and techniques in using power carvers to create dimensional gourd art. Students will learn how to design,dye, wood burn and carve this flower bowl. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Students must supply their own dremel or power carver, burrs and wood burner. I do have a wood burner that can be shared but this would have to be used in turns. We also have a variety of burrs available for purchase.

Just Wing It

In this workshop we will explore various mediums to create 3 unique pairs of beautiful fairy or angel wings. The finished wings will be applicable on various types of figures, whether soft sculpture, polymer sculpture or other crafts. All materials will be supplied.

Sculpting a Woodland Elf

Sept 19th and 20th. From 10 - 4 This is a two day workshop, that students will learn the Leslie Bailey technique to sculpt and build a woodland elf. This workshop is for all skill levels. It is a great introduction to sculpting in polymer clay, as well as very beneficial to those with previous sculpting experience. Day one will be spent learning step by step techniques to sculpting a male head, hands and feet, in polymer clay. Day two will be spent assembling your elf on a wire armature. You will learn painting, adding hair and some basic costuming to complete your elf. All material supplied. Students are required to bring a metal knitting needle and a stylus for sculpting with and any other sculpting tools if they have some, however the knitting needle and stylus is all that is required. I will have sculpting tools and clay for sale, for your future dolls, should you be interested. You may bring small bits of fabric and or trims on day two,( if you would like to use in your costuming) however a selection will be provided as part of the class. Sorry, but there will be no refunds on missed workshop attendance.

Clucking Along

This workshop was such a success last month that I had to bring it back! These are the actual creations from our students from the last workshop! So come on out, kick back, relax and enjoy the country air while designing your own country rooster. This laid back , nothing but fun workshop will teach you how to transform a gourd using paints and apoxie sculpt and a little imagination. Take a little country home!

Diving Dolphin

This is a great workshop for beginners who would like to advance their skills in gourd carving.The combination of wood burning and carving will be explored to create the diving dolphin. The background for the dolphin will be designed using gourd removal and stippling techniques. Students will learn how to use different bits for tighter areas. If time allows the dolphin will also be painted using water based paints. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Students must provide own power carvers, burrs, bits, mask and burner. I have one burner but students would have to wait their turn to share it. Ear plugs are strongly recommended. Burrs and bits are available for purchase.

Power Carving Turtel with Dimensional Ripples

Graceful dimensional ripples and filegree will add spectacular design and depth to your gourd art. The carving and stippling techniques that you practise will give you the knowledge and confidence to progress to more difficult projects. This is a beginner to advance workshops. Completion of this workshop will need be completed at home with the skills learned. Students MUST bring own burs and bits. We do have them available for purchase but NOT to loan. A couple of power carvers will be available for loan on a first come basis. Dust mask is a MUST and earplugs recommended. Gourds sizes and shapes will vary. Workshop runs from 10-4.

Tools required: Proxon carver, Dremel or other carving tool, burs and bits

Gingerbread House Luminaire

In this creative worshop students are able to release their own creative energy in designing a gingerbread luminaire. Using apoxie sculpt and paints a simple gourd will be transformed into a working luminaire. Paint brushes are available but feel free to bring your own. I have some saws to lend but please bring your own dust mask. Price of workshops does not include tax. Light fixture is included in supplies. Workshop 10 - 3.

Old Time Santa (This is a 2 day workshop)

These Old Time Santas are definetly collecter pieces. Students will learn how to sculpt the faces and beards with two types of sculpting medium on tall snake gourds. There are no molds used, all formations are free hand. Faces will be painted and an antiquing method will be used on beards and trim. Students must bring their own artist brushes with one being a 3/4 wide and a variety of finer sizes for intricate areas. If you already have your own sculpting tools bring them along. Please Note, this workshop takes two days to complete one Santa and runs from 10 - 3 on both Sat and Sun.

Christmas Penguin

Create these Christmas tree ornaments by using ornamental gourds, paints and apoxie sculpt. The santa is a banana gourd approximately three inches long and the whimsical penguin is a mini bottle gourd two inches tall. Students should bring their own paint brushes. Workshop runs from 10 - 2.
