Workshop Schedule

Whether painted, dyed, woodburned or carved, gourds can be transformed into works of art. In response to the increasing interest in gourds and gourd art, we're excited to offer a creative assortment of gourd crafting workshops to help you discover this wonderful pursuit.

All classes are held on our property just outside the quaint little town of Cookstown. Surrounded by lush gardens and rolling fields, this is the perfect place for a day of learning and creativity. Using GPS will get you lost; please refer to our map.

Our workshops are designed for beginners to advanced. You will be amazed at some of the beautiful creations you'll be able to create following some guidance and our simple instructions

Customers may cancel up to 10 days before workshop for a full refund. After that, a 25% service charge will be applied and the balance refunded. No refund will be given if cancellation is within 3 days of workshop date.

Black Beauty

This workshop is designed for the person who does not have a saw and does not feel comfortable with a saw. Students will start off with a pre leaf designed cut gourd. They will do the final interior cleaning and painting. After wood burning fine details and coloring leaves with memory inks, the bottom half will be painted black. Students are required to supply their own woodburners. This workshop is offered twice so please confirm preferred date. Workshop runs from 10 - 2.

Fall Harvest

This workshop is designed for students who do not have saws or simply are not comfortable with saws. Pre cut leaf designed bowls will be the starting point. Students will do the final interior sanding, painting and trim paint. Students will use their own wood burners to burn the final leaf design which will then be colored useing a memory ink blending technique. Workshop runs from 10 - 2. This workshop is being offered twice so please confirm preferred date.

Experience level: beginners to advanced
Tools required: Students must provide their own wood burnerand dust mask.

Introduction to Power Carving

Are you a gourder who has the power carving tools, bits and burs but have no idea what they are used for? Have you seen amazing carved gourds and just don't know where to start? If yes, then this intro to carving with power tools is for you. Burs and bits are NOT available to borrow but we do have them here for purchase. A mask with a rating of N95 is a must. This can be purchased for a few dollars at Home Hardware or Home Depot. Ear plugs are HIGHLY recommended. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Gourds will vary in shape and sizes.

Tools required: Dremel, proxoxn carver, burs and bits, ear plugs, face mask

Funky Birds!!

This workshop is just plain fun and whimsical! Each student will go home with thier own gourd bird. Students will first choose their metal bird frames. From there it is a trip to the gourd bins to choose that perfect gourd body! Oh so many gourds to choose from!! After washing and prepping the perfect gourd, students will have a rainbow of colours to choose from to paint and finish their birds. Bird frames will all differ as they are hand made. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Your own artist paint brushes are also suggested. This workshop is being offered twice. Please confirm dates.

Power Carving Turtel with Dimensional Ripples

Graceful dimensional ripples and filegree will add spectacular design and depth to your gourd art. The carving and stippling techniques that you practise will give you the knowledge and confidence to progress to more difficult projects. This is a beginner to advance workshops. Completion of this workshop will need be completed at home with the skills learned. Students MUST bring own burs and bits. We do have them available for purchase but NOT to loan. A couple of power carvers will be available for loan on a first come basis. Dust mask is a MUST and earplugs recommended. Gourds sizes and shapes will vary. Workshop runs from 10-4.

Whimsical Santa (This is a 2 day workshop)

This early workshop will give you time and ability to make family and friends a treasured gift for Chrstmas! In this two day workshop you will learn how to sculpt this whimsical Santa on a kettle gourd. Using two types of sculpting medium students will learn how to free hand sculpt the faces, beards and mistletoe. There are no molds used. Students will also learn how to paint their santas as well as antiquing techniques for the face and beards. Student must bring thier own acrylic paint brushes. Please make sure you have a 3/4 inch wide brush for basecoating larger areas as well as finer brushes for detailed areas such as the eyes and face. If you have your own sculpting tools please bring them along. Workshop runs 10 -3 both Sat. and Sunday This workshop is being offered twice so please confirm your preferred date.

Ready to create the beautiful sound of thunder using a thunder drum!! Join us for the day and create one using the combination of a gourd, skin, and spring to give you the realistic sound of thunder. These Old Time Santas are definetly collector pieces. Students will learn how to sculpt the faces and beards with two types of sculpting medium on tall snake gourds. There are no molds used, all formations are free hand. Faces will be painted and an antiquing method will be used on beards and trim. Students must bring their own artist brushes with one being a 3/4 wide and a variety of finer sizes for intricate areas. If you already have your own sculpting tools bring them along. Please Note, this workshop takes two days to complete one Santa and runs from 10 - 3 on both Sat and Sun.
