Workshop Schedule

Whether painted, dyed, woodburned or carved, gourds can be transformed into works of art. In response to the increasing interest in gourds and gourd art, we're excited to offer a creative assortment of gourd crafting workshops to help you discover this wonderful pursuit.

All classes are held on our gourd farm just outside the quaint little town of Cookstown. Surrounded by lush gardens and the beautiful gourd patch, this is the perfect place for a day of learning and creativity.

Our instructors have many years of gourd crafting and teaching experience and represent some of the best gourd artists in Canada. Each is an expert in their field.

All classes, unless otherwise noted, are 6 hours in length with a half hour lunch break. A convenient starting time of 10 a.m. for all our classes makes for a leisurely drive from many parts of Ontario and the United States. All the following classes are rated for beginners.

Customers may cancel up to 10 days before workshop for a full refund. After that, a 25% service charge will be applied and the balanced refunded. No refund will be given if cancellation is within 3 days of workshop date.

Ringed Dreamcatcher

This is a Native American tradition of the dreamcatcher where a web like pattern traps bad dreams and allows good ones to pass through. Using materials including, suede, beads, feathers, brads and linen thread, this creates the gourd version of the dream catcher. Students may choose between four different coloured linen thread and several colours of faux leather lacing. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Taxes are not included.

Experience level: beginner to advanced
Tools required: Teacher supplies all tools and supplies

Sculpture

This beginners workshop will teach some of the basic techiques in sculpting a face. No molds are used, the face is sculpted free hand. The head will be then attached to a suitable gourd and then painted. Further embellishments will include feathers, fur, beads and suede. The chest shield will be made out of porcupine quills. Better quality paint brushes make a huge difference in finished projects. If you would like me to pick up the following recommended paintbrushes please let me know a week before the workshop. I will not have any available to sell on the day of the workshop. 1/2 angle $3.99 #4 round $3.99 #2 liner $2.99 Beginners will find sculpting easier if they have short nails. Tweezers are recommended for handling the fine quills. Workshop runs from 10 - 4.

Mexican Braid

The beautiful Mexican Braid or round braid makes a fantastic gourd rim. Although this beautiful stich may look difficult, with proper instruction you will be on your way to creating these beautiful gourd rims in no time. To learn how to burn and paint the celtic design please refer to workshop list for offered dates. Price does not include taxes.

Lacing

This lacing technique ia a beautiful rim accent. Students will learn how to measure and prepare the rim for lacing. Feathers will embellish the finished rim. The pointillism technique is not included in this workshop but will be taught on a further date. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Taxes are not included in price.

Fall Beauty

Enjoy the rich colours of fall all year after learning the application and blending techniques of memory inks. The use of different finishing sprays will also be explored. Students will design and cut their own leaf patterns using provided templates. In place of using a wood burner to outline the leaves, fine tip Micron pens will be used. Prices do not include tax.

Celtic Knots

Learn and hone your pyrography skills while creating the beautiful celtic knot. A choice of patters will be provided as well as different colours of memory inks to apply to the design. Transfering patterns to gourds will be taught as well as how to apply inks to small areas. Students are required to bring their own wood burner with knife burning tip. Workshop runs from 10 - 3.

Cottage Luminaire

In this creative worshop students are able to release their own creative energy in designing a cottage luminaire. Using apoxie sculpt and paints a simple gourd will be transformed into a working luminaire. The following three paint brushes are recommended and need to be supplied by the student. If you would like me to pick them up please let me know a week before the class date. 1/2 angle $3.99 #4 round $3.99 #2 liner $2.99 These brushes can be used in future workshops. Price of workshops and brushes do not include tax. Light fixture is included in supplies.

Butterfly Vase

This beautiful gourd vase combines a couple of different techniques. The top half of the gourd is left natural with a butterfly design. Instead of wood burning, Micron fine tip pens will be used to accent the memory inked butterfly. The lower half of the gourd will be embellished with a golden texture and wrapped with danish cord. Workshop runs from 10 - 3. Prices do not include taxes.
